Part 1: Online Dating Safety Tips

Trust your instincts

Let’s be real. You’re meeting strangers for the first time. If you feel unsafe or threatened, cease communication and report any misbehavior immediately using the OkCupid Contact page.

Guard your identity

Don’t share your full name, personal phone number, email address, home address, place of work or any other identifying information while messaging until you’ve established a reasonable level of trust with the other party. Do not post personal contact information in your profile.

Protect your online access information

Use caution when accessing your account from a public or shared computer so that others are not able to view or record your password or other personal information. If you share your computer with others, consider disabling your auto sign-in feature if you have one enabled.

Remain anonymous until you feel comfortable

Take advantage of OkCupid’s technology that protects your identity until YOU choose to reveal it.

Get to know the other person online before meeting them offline

If you would like more information about someone before you meet, we recommend using the internet and government resources available. A search of someone’s name can reveal a lot.

Block abusive users

Block any member who behaves or treats you in an abusive way and report the behavior to OkCupid immediately via their profile or the Contact form. Stop communicating immediately with anyone who pressures you for personal or financial information. You can block and report concerns or terms of use violations from any profile page, your message window, or their profile page. We will never alert someone that you have blocked them, and your reports help keep OkCupid enjoyable for everyone.

Examples of terms of use violations include:

  • Minors using the service

  • Members sending harassing or offensive messages

  • Members asking you for money or donations

  • Members behaving inappropriately after meeting in person

  • Fraudulent registration or profiles

  • Spam or solicitation, such as invitations to call 1-900 numbers or attempts to sell products or services

  • Copyright infringement

  • Any other violation of OkCupid's policies

Part 2: Offline Dating Safety Tips

First meetings are exciting, but you should always take precautions and stick to established safety guidelines.

Always meet in public

Meet for the first time in a populated, public location—never in a private or remote location.

Tell a friend

Inform a friend or family member of your plans, including when and where you’re going. Bring your mobile phone and charger if you have one.

Stay sober, or mind your alcohol intake

Do not do anything that would impair your judgment. Staying sober is a good idea for a first-time meeting. If you do meet a date for a drink, keep your alcohol intake to a minimum and your eye on your glass so that it is not tampered with.

Don’t accept a ride for the first meeting

You need to be in control of your own ride, whether that means driving yourself, taking public transit, or using a cab or car service.

Don’t leave personal items unattended

You don’t want to risk having personal information stolen, so keep items like your wallet with you at all times. As previously mentioned, keep your drink with you, too.

Stay in a public place

It is best not to go back to your date’s home or bring them back to yours on the first date. If your date pressures you, end the date and leave at once.

Meeting long distance? Here are some safety suggestions.

  • Stay in a hotel and keep the hotel location confidential. If you can’t afford a hotel, don’t go. DO NOT stay in the other person’s home.

  • Use a taxi or rental car to get to and from the airport. Do not get into a personal vehicle with someone you’ve never met.

  • Remember to keep your family and friends posted -- tell them who you are meeting, where you are going and when you will return.

Part 3: Sexual Health Tips

For sexual health information, we recommend checking out Planned Parenthood’s Sexual Health page for up-to-date information from medical professionals. We want all OkCupid members to feel comfortable and safe in their dating life--and that includes their sex life, too.

Part 4: Fraud Awareness

When it comes to your money and identity, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Please report any suspicious activity or behavior via the OkCupid Contact page immediately, and follow the tips below to protect yourself against fraud.

  • Don’t give out your credit card number or bank info.

  • Don’t share your personal info, such as SSN, address, phone number, etc.

  • NEVER share your personal or financial information with people you don’t know.

  • NEVER send money to someone you meet online.

    • Scammers often insist that people wire money, especially overseas, because it’s nearly impossible to reverse the transaction or trace the money. Don’t wire money to strangers or to someone who claims to be in an emergency (and wants to keep the request a secret).

Part 5: Scammer Awareness

Scammers are out there. Below you can find examples of typical scammer activity that should be reported immediately.

  • Quickly asks to talk or chat on an outside email or messaging service

  • Vanishes mysteriously from the site, then reappears under a different name

  • Talks about “destiny” or “fate”

  • Claims to be recently widowed

  • Asks for your address under the guise of sending flowers or gifts

  • Makes an inordinate number of grammatical and/or spelling errors

  • Claims to be from U.S. but currently traveling, living or working abroad

  • Asks you for money
